This week's topic is favorite reading group book. The one book limit is pretty hard to uphold. The book Jivey mentioned, There's a Boy in the Girls Bathroom is a favorite, as well as Frindle that I saw on the list of books already linked up, so I thought I'd share something different: Because of Winn Dixie.
This book is written by Kate DiCamillo, and is about a little girl, Opal, and a dog she and her father take in: Winn-Dixie. It is because of Winn-Dixie that Opal learns 10 things about her long, lost mother, she makes friends with the residents of the new town she has moved into, and she begins to find her place in the world letting go of some of the sadness of her past.
It was a great read that the student's enjoyed. In all honesty, they love any book that also has a movie as a companion piece and we were able to view this when finished the book. It was fun to listen to the students critisize some of the decisions that were made by the movie producers as far as story lines and costumes, I heard more than once, "that wasn't how it was in the book!"(I think the book was better enjoyed than the movie by the time it was said and done... yes!)
When we read this book, I bought a packet from Dots-N-Spots for this book. It's chock full of great activities, vocabulary, and quizzes over the book. We used many ideas from this pack to supplement our reading time. This included a "Clever Candy Creations" display for the hallway. The kids had a blast doing this activity.
This student wrote about "Greatful Gooeys" that tasted like a Thanksgiving dinner. |
This display is nothing like the one in the packet, click on Dots-N-Spots to see her amazing display! |

This is a great book. My kids love it too. I'm going to be starting it with a small group of kids next week.

I love that book! And I really like the movie too! It was fun watching with my class because they noticed Otis being arrested while Opal was putting up signs. You could hear them all gasp and then they pointed at the screen! So fun!

Love, love, love this book! It inspired a very troubled reluctant reader in my room and I will forever remember this book as one of my favorites because of that sweet child! Thanks for sharing. :)

I have never read the book! I wonder if it would work for a class read-aloud? I bet it would. You are so full of great ideas!

Another great choice! The kids always love this one. We read it and watch part of the movie to compare and contrast. They are really annoyed that the movie leaves some of the best parts out or changes them. :)

I loooove Kate DiCamillo (I sort of cheated and talked about all of her books too!) I read just the first few chapters to my class of Because of Winn Dixie this year and they were hooked...but I didn't keep reading. I told them they had to read on their own or they could do it in guided reading. I had 2 groups pick it! They loved it!!
